Endocrinology

The Department of Endocrinology is dedicated to providing the highest standard of care for the full spectrum of hormonal and metabolic disorders and their associated conditions or complications.

The members of our team, all extensively trained in general endocrinology, have diverse clinical and research interests and skills within the specialty. This ensures appropriate expertise is always on hand for the in-hospital management of:

  • Obesity – e.g., leading up to and following bariatric (weight loss) surgery
  • Diabetes - poor control of which can greatly compromise recovery or healing from major cardiothoracic, abdominal and orthopaedic surgery
  • Thyroid gland dysfunction – e.g., the overactivity that can complicate the use of commonly-used diagnostic and therapeutic iodine-containing compounds
  • Metabolic bone disease - in particular postmenopausal and steroid-induced osteoporosis, resulting in spinal or hip fracture
  • Pituitary gland dysfunction - mainly the diagnosis and treatment of hormone deficiencies following the removal of a pituitary tumour
  • Endocrine emergencies – such as severe hypercalcaemia (high calcium levels), which can complicate various cancers

The effects of endocrine conditions can be far-reaching and long-lasting, so close links exist between our team and other departments, in particular cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular medicine/surgery, renal medicine and neurosurgery have been developed.
