The Department of Haematology and Blood Stem Cell Transplantation at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney provides a comprehensive service in consultative, therapeutic and diagnostic haematology.

Our department has particular expertise in the use of blood stem cell transplantation. We’re accredited by the Australasian Bone Marrow Donor Registry to carry out unrelated allogeneic transplants. It hosts the Australian Bone Marrow Recipient Registry, which collects data on all the blood stem cell transplants carried out in Australia and New Zealand.

We have an active clinical and laboratory research program. We conduct fundamental research and clinical trials in blood diseases and blood related cancers. Our aim is to be an internationally recognised unit for facilitating the rapid transfer of new discoveries to patient care and for disseminating health education and medical research to the public.

Our current research is looking at:

  • stem cell transplantation to treat severe autoimmune disease
  • the molecular markers of leukemic cells
  • the diagnostic values of genetic and coagulation tests for thromboembolism

Other areas of expertise include HIV/AIDS related cancers, thrombosis and haemostasis anticoagulation therapies and apheresis.
